A Christmas wreath is a very commonly recognised symbol of the festive nativity period. They are used in homes and other settings as decorations on doors, walls or tables. With so many different designs to choose from, why not engage your little ones in a seasonal craft activity and make your own wreath this year!

In this blog, we share four very different designs from a simple pom pom wreath to a natural wreath for you to try with your little ones!

1. Mindful Weaving Frame Christmas Wreath

To make your wreath you will need:

To make the Weaving Frame Wreath

  • Bring out wooden weaving frames for children to practice developing fine motor and concentration skills. Set out assorted ribbons to choose from.
  • Thread each ribbon through the holes in the frame to make different patterns
  • Try adding pom poms in the holes for extra decoration
  • String a final piece of ribbon to the top of the frame to hang up the wreath!

2. Handmade Natural Wreath

To make your wreath you will need:

  • Cardboard
  • A selection of evergreen shrubbery and leaves
  • Glue
  • Ribbon

To make a Natural Wreath:

  • To start your natural wreath, wrap up warm and head outside to collect your natural resources. Try and find evergreens such as holly or pine but be careful of the sharp spines! Evergreens will mean your wreath stays beautiful and green for longer!
  • Once you have your collection of natural resources head back inside to start the craft!
  • Cut out a large cardboard circle and poke holes across it using a sharp pencil
  • Add your natural leaves and resources then secure on the reverse using tape if needed
  • Finally, add a length of ribbon to your wreath and you’re done!

3. DIY Pom Pom Wreath

To make your DIY pom pom wreath you will need:

To make the Pom Pom Wreath:

  1. Start by selecting your pom poms – will you go for a festive theme? We chose colours heavily associated with Christmas like red, green and white and added some glitter pom poms in for good measure
  2. If using a paper plate, fold it in half and cut out a semi-circle from the centre to create the base of your wreath
  3. Next, add a dab of glue to each pom pom and secure it to your base. You might need to hold these in place until the glue has dried
  4. Continue adding pom poms until you have filled the base
  5. Finally, add a ribbon around your wreath and then it is ready to hang!

4. Nativity Candle Wreath

To make your DIY paper plate nativity wreath you will need:

To make the Nativity Christmas Wreath

  1. Fold the paper plate in half and cut out the centre to create a wreath shape
  2. Use strips of green paper to cover the paper plate base, securing it in place with glue
  3. Add sequin shapes to the wreath for decoration (you can also use card or pom poms to decorate)
  4. To make the candle, cut two strips of glitter card and attach them together in an L-shape. Cross each strip over the other and glue it inside the centre of the wreath
  5. Add flames using yellow and orange tissue paper and the wreath is complete for the Christmas celebration!
