As autumn arrives, squirrels are busy collecting food supplies for the coming winter. Make your own autumn squirrels using our easy DIY guide!

Did you know…

  • The UK is home to the original native red squirrel but has since been taken over by the American grey squirrels
  • Squirrels have 4 toes which they use for grip and climbing trees
  • The position of squirrel’s eyes mean they can see right behind them
  • Squirrels can leap around 10 times their body length
  • There are around 285 different species of squirrel!

Art materials you will need:

To make your Autumn squirrel:

  1. Cut a section of egg carton carefully and with adult supervision
  2. Then paint it with your chosen coloured paint for example, grey and leave it to dry
  3. Cut a face and tail from grey felt, and glue them on.
  4. Add a light brown nose and googly eyes and you have your first squirrel!
  5. Why not repeat the process to create a woodland scene filled with squirrels?

Tips:

  • Make larger autumn squirrels using yogurt pots!
  • Thread the autumn squirrels onto wool and hang them from the ceiling for a jolly autumn display.
