The theme for this year’s British Science Week, which takes place between the 8th and 17th March, is journeys. Learn more on the British Science Week Website
We’ve picked out a few different ways in which the theme can be tied to the national curriculum to help make your British Science Week 2019 activities fun and engaging…
Journeys on Earth and Beyond
The most obvious journeys are the ones that we do everyday; driving, flying or even walking. Whether it’s teaching children about travelling to different places on Earth or exploring space and beyond – physical journeys are a great area to focus on during British Science Week 2019.
Activities can be related to topics such as the solar system, different parts of the world – or even road safety!
Activity Tip: create paper planes using paper or card and have a flying competition. This will be a great learning tool for physics!
Electric Journeys
Journeys don’t have to be physical; they can also relate to time and technology.
Teaching children about how we have developed over time can easily be introduced during British Science Week 2019 and are key aspects of the curriculum. Topics might include; the discovery of electricity, how technology has advanced, and how society has changed over time. All different types of journeys in their own way.
Activity Tip: encourage children to think about the importance of electricty; what it allows us to do and how it allows us to live. What would they do if they couldn’t use it?
Journeys Through Nature
Some of the most fascinating journeys are made by those in nature. With Spring fast approaching, now is the perfect time to explore the outdoors and discover how journeys can relate to the natural world.
Learn about life cycles, explore different environments and discover new worlds.
Activity Tip: head outside and prompt children to discover what’s living around them. Think about what journeys animals make in their day-to-day lives.
Is your school making the most of the opportunity?
